One of the best ways to save for the future is to invest your money in the right products. Putting your extra money somewhere where it has a chance to grow in value is a good move. Any wrong move will only make you lose your hard earned savings.

What you should do then is to be extra careful in choosing investment products. Make sure it’s within your budget and not something that many people are investing in at the moment. Following the trend is never a good idea, according to the experts. It’s what they call “portfolio envy” which prompts people to be envious when they see the others around them making money. But instead of having this attitude, you should rather focus on your individual goals and not follow those of your neighbor’s actions.

Another move you should take is to make regular investments at specific intervals. While you are still earning a regular income, it would be ideal to consider the so-called target date funds. This type of funds usually adjusts its mix of investments according to your anticipated retirement date.

Reconsider your decision of investing in bonds. Putting your money in treasury bonds may be seen as a safe move but it isn’t always so. You should know that when interest rates go up or the fiscal situation in the U.S. deteriorates, for instance, you could lose money from your treasury bonds notably when you’ve invested on the long-term ones.

A good alternative is to continue to invest in stocks especially if you’re still young. If you want to go with bonds, make sure to choose the short-term ones only. Experts recommend the treasury securities which are inflation protected than the 30-year treasury bonds.

A word of caution, though. If you will be using your money in the coming years, it’s not ideal to invest in the stock market. It would be better that you put your money in an online bank savings account that provides a high interest.

In addition, be responsible enough and do your research in the investment products you buy. Don’t rely too much on a stockbroker who may just be making money from you and not giving you the right advice. There have been many cases of stockbrokers who just pushed their clients to invest in the more expensive products with the end goal of earning higher commissions. You would benefit more if you get a financial planner that charges you a set fee in exchange for his advice on investments.

Your retirement account is also a good investment opportunity. But don’t assume too much when it comes to the amount you’ll get for retirement. You have to adjust your expectations if possible.

Finally, your home can be a good investment as well but don’t just expect too much. You can beautify your home if you want to add value to the property but don’t think that you can sell it right away in the event the need arises. The housing market has its ups and downs so again, proper research is necessary before making any decisions.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make money on the futures market. It is a rather high risk, high reward environment, however if you know what you are doing you can make a boat load of money, even earn a living from trading the futures market.

Before getting your feet wet you must first understand the hidden secrets that are lurking beneath the murky surface. Too many times do you see newbies jump right in to trading futures without first realising what the hidden catches are.

There are some hidden catches, but once you know how to use them to your advantage then you will be able to take consistent profits from the futures market again and again.

Here are 7 of the most important tips on how to make money in the futures market today.

1. Don’t try the futures market if you have no money.

A lot of people get the idea that making money on the futures exchange is easy and they go ahead and put big amounts on that they cannot afford to lose. That is a big NO NO.

2. Do not try some gimmick or secret you read in a book.

The quickest way to lose money on the futures market is to go out and try one of the secrets you heard from a friend or read in a book. These are just rumours and mostly do not work. If you are going to test a certain strategy, ensure you do it low key and with small amounts of money before going all out. Small tests will help you see consistent results. You will not make lots of money but the risks are small and you will not lose your entire account in case things go against you.

3. Think short term and long term.

Do not try to figure out what is going to happen in the futures market in the next 2 hours. Yes this can make you money, but there are a lot of successful traders that are making money long term in futures also. They do not care about the day to day fluctuations, or what happens every minute of every day.

4. Do not over experiment.

There is such a thing as trying to hard on the futures exchange. Normally the good traders will find something that works, and then keep trying to make the system and strategy work better. Just realise there is no holy grail to trading. There is no system that is going to make you money 100% of the time. Accept you will take small losses, and find a system that works consistently and stick to it. Keep it close to you and use it as your weapon against the market.

5. Use a professional trading platform.

There are many good platforms you can use to trade futures. But there is a darker side to trading futures, where many broking houses offer buggy platforms, that are worse than second rate. Just do you homework first and find out what the top brokers are recommending. These platforms normally perform the best and keep clients happy. When it is your money at risk you want to ensure you have safety and reliability on your side. Otherwise there can be drastic consequences.

6. Be aware what is happening out there in the economy.

After the global financial crisis some countries are doing very poorly, and there is currently some currencies issues. It might be worth your time to find out how the economy is doing in your area of the world. If things are not looking good it is better to save money to buy daily items before you go risking it all on the futures market.

7. Use a proven stop loss management system.

This is the number one reason why many traders out there fail. They throw money into the futures market without even contemplating what their plan is if things go against them. Things will not go according to plan 100% of the time. Taking losses are a part of the game, and more like a business expense for professional traders. Just accept it and always exit a position if it goes against you. It is hard to admit your are wrong, but just accept it and get out the trade. That will ensure you have money for the next trade that presents itself.

Forex is simply a change in currency. When will you need to do this? When you go overseas for a holiday, or a business trip. You need to change your money from your countries currency to the currency of the country that you are visiting. This exchange can be use to explain what Forex is about.

When you arrive at the money changer, you will be able to see pairs of currency on the display board telling you how much you will get from the amount that you want to change. When you change you money, you re actually performing a Forex transaction. You can either buy or sell the money that you have with you.

Now, the Forex market is huge. It is the largest financial market in the world. With 4 Trillion of trading volume per day, Forex is much bigger than the stock market which have a 74 billion worth of volume traded every single day. Therefore, can you feel the enormous possibility of earnings through it? If we can just take a tiny little amount of that 4 trillion every single day, wouldn’t it be great?

Now, we say it is very much different from the stock or future exchange market because Forex is an interbank. This means that it is an over-the-counter market where there is no single universal exchange for a certain pair of currency. It is a 24 hour market operating daily 5 days a week. The exact time will differ depending on the Forex Broker that you use.

There is the European session. When it ends, the Asian session or the US session will begin. So there is no need for you to wait for the market to open in order to start trading like what you need to with stock trading.

How can you trade Forex? It is very simple. What you need to do is to search for Forex Broker that you are comfortable with. The broker will provide you with the software for you to install the trading platform on to your personal computer. Obviously, you will need to have a stable internet connection to trade. Once your account is verified, you can go ahead and fund you account. Difference brokers will allow different minimum deposit. Some go as low as $100 to start a micro account but that might not be such a good idea. Choosing a broker will be one of the most important parts in Forex Trading because the spread provided by the brokers are all different. So, choose wisely. Just for your information, I choose FX Primus, a Broker that is audited by Ernst & Young.

Ultimately, you should know that great earning capabilities do comes with high risk. This is very true and in Forex, there are risks involved and for starters out there, trade only with the amount that you are ready to lose. Don’t start trading and put all your money in straight away.

For traders that look to increase their P/L, using a futures trading system can give you the returns you’ve been looking for.

What is a futures trading system? First, let’s start with the term “trading system”. A trading system is a set of rules that quantify how to place trades for a basket of or a single security or commodity. It is very typical for these rules to be computer-based and to have the ability to run truly in a hands-free manner.

What are futures? The term futures describes a group of contracts that are openly traded on futures exchanges across the globe. While these contracts are technically agreements to transact an amount of the underlying asset at some point in time in the future, the simplest way to think of them like stocks that expire on a certain date. Gold, stock indices (like the Nasdaq), currencies, oil, and treasury bonds are some of the most popular contracts.

Why trade futures? Trading futures gives that extra something special that is badly needed in a stock-heavy portfolio: diversification. It is quite common in the past that as stocks go up, futures tend to lose value. And when stocks drop, futures tend to rally. This pattern isn’t perfect, but it is quite common. At other times they move in completely unique and independent ways. This means that the futures market is only weakly correlated to the stock market. This is is a big advantage and it help an investor’s portfolio to survive the storm of stock market bull and bear markets.

And don’t forget that most futures are based on commodities: things like gold, oil, coffee, and wheat. These commodities have a global demand and aren’t subject to the “fads” that can really take stocks for a ride. When global prices for these commodities gain in value, we can gain from these price shifts by entering trades on commodities through futures.

Most importantly, why use a trading system? Trading systems offer several advantages over a discretionary approach. Discretionary trading involves making non-systematic choices about in what and when to invest. The advantage to using a trading system is that, rather than making decisions on what “feels right”, the astute investor can can make informed trade decisions that are founded on profitable patterns with a high historical likelihood of success.

Secondly, and just as important, systems trading provides a means to control your emotions when making trading decisions. How many times have you sold after a long losing streak and then you see your stock suddenly turns around and gains back all the losses, leaving you reeling? How many times have you bought when the security looked like it would never stop going up, and then see your investment tank in the coming weeks? We are all subjects to “herd mentality”, and this often leads to bad investment decisions. Thankfully by using systems, we can avoid this faulty thought process and make truly objective investment decisions.

Lastly, and possibly most important, using trading systems frees up your time. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy your time, have extra time to spend with your family, or keep up with your hobbies, rather than endlessly debating your next portfolio decision. With most trading systems now being computerized, they run automatically, and this frees up your time to spend how you please. For those of you that aren’t computer savvy, there are many futures brokers will now faithfully execute trades for your chosen system each and every market day for you and that means you don’t have to be involved in the daily operations at all.

Every day trader engaged in online day trading the futures, stocks, options or Forex markets should have a trading plan in place that serves as their road map during every trading day. Entries and exits from the market should never be random. There always should be a reason behind each trade taken by them and supported by their own trading plan written by them. Chances are, if they are over trading or under trading a particular market and a well written and followed trading plan is in place, then that plan needs to be modified. If he is over trading he or she will need to make the entry and exit conditions more stringent for the market to manufacture fewer but higher probability signals. When he adds more conditions that need to be met in order for a trade to be triggered, he will automatically do fewer trades but chances are that they will be more consistent and more profitable. Of course, there is no way of knowing that this will work out but it is a step closer to success.

If the day trader is under trading, it is very likely that the day trader is simply watching a market like the futures or Forex markets without a plan in place and he is missing out on opportunities presented to him by the market on a daily basis. If the day trader does have a plan in place, then it is very likely that the conditions needed to enter and exit are too restrictive which allows for missed opportunities. If the trading plan does not allow the trader to capitalize on market movements it should be adjusted in such a way that he or she can take part in these moves.

A day trader should never miss opportunities given to him or her by the market because of the fear of losing. A successful online day trader always has a trading plan in place for the markets he trades. The plan will always guide the trader as to what exactly must happen in the market in order for him to enter and exit his trades.

All online day traders should have a trading plan in place to guide them during the trading day. With the trading plan in place, a trader needs to do a self-assessment of whether he is over or under trading the market as per his plan. Based on these results the day trader can alter his trading plan to suit his trading needs and likely become a more consistently profitable trader. If the day trader is over trading, he can make his trading plan more restrictive for entries and exits. If the day trader is under- trading, he can relax his trading plan criteria to take advantage of more potentially profitable moves in the market.

The major league of trading

Being a commodity trader is like playing in the major leagues. You better have the proper training and experience, or you simply do not have a prayer of being successful in the long run. This market tends to move fast, and there is incredible leverage. As an example, if you acquire one futures contract of corn, you actually control 5000 bushels. This means every one cent move is worth $50.00. I see the stock market as the minor league, but it still has a high degree of difficulty. I trade both the futures market, and the stock market. In this article, I will share with you some good, solid information on how to make money as a commodity trader.

The big 3

You need to have a successful trading plan. It is important to have the plan fit your personality, as much as possible. The trading plan is your blueprint for success in the market. It will encompass all aspects of trading.

Money management is a crucial element. You simply must cut your losses short, if you want to be a winner in the long run. Keep all losses small, and let your profits run. If you follow this golden rule of trading, your future as a commodity trader is bright.

Proper trading psychology is what separates the fairly good trader from the best traders in the world. You must keep emotions such as fear, greed, and hope, out of your trading equation. Emotions will cloud your thinking, and not allow you to trade in a logical, objective manner. The various trading markets are human nature and crowd psychology on display daily. Many of the successful trading principles are contrary to normal human nature. That is a main reason why most traders and investors ultimately fail.

The price chart is a valuable tool

The price chart is an important tool for the market technician. The successful commodity trader must implement the proper interpretation of chart patterns. This is a key to winning big. As an example, you can trade the breakout of the daily, weekly, or monthly chart. Always trade with the trend on the breakout. Once you are proven correct by the price action of the market, you may then add to your position.

Volume will tell you plenty

Volume is a great measure of supply and demand. It can give you clues to help you recognize whether a commodity or stock, is under accumulation or distribution. If a commodity shows a big price jump to new highs, on much heavier than normal volume, this tells me the big buyers are causing the jump in price. Price and volume action like this bodes well for the continuation of higher prices.

During a major price advance, volume tends to increase on rallies, and decrease on reactions. During a major price decline, volume tends to increase when the price goes down, and decrease when the price goes up. Many times as bottoms and tops are approached, volume will expand sharply. As a commodity trader, being able to properly interpret price and volume action gives you a major advantage.

There are lots of companies that allow margin trading. Margin trading means trading stocks or index with very little capital. Some companies require just 3% as margin money in stocks, currencies and commodities. This offers a very high leverage to a person in terms of money.

Margin trading does not offer opportunity or time to gauge market sentiment. It means a high probability trading since trade execution happens very rapidly. A person needs special skills to identify the potential movement of the market in few minutes. There is very little scope for holding to the positions.

Margin trading can be extremely risky if a person is not aware about the working of markets. A person might lose money quickly than he anticipates. This high-frequency trading often results in the loss of precious capital. It is advisable that a person educates himself enough to gain confidence to step in the world of high probability trades.

The lure of low margin attracts people as they feel margin trading is just like a lottery. There is a huge difference between the lottery and trading in stocks. Trading in stocks and commodities require luck as well as special skills. Profit booking is the key to success. A trader who does not book profits and becomes greedy often finds himself on a tough path. There are high chances that the winning position might change into a losing one very quickly.

Stock market or any other market requires a special set of skills. These skills are easy to master; it only requires patience and zeal to learn. Proper trading education ensures that there will be fewer losing trades and more winning ones.

Anyone who wishes to profit from the stock market must cultivate patience. A person must pursue education; if possible learn from someone who knows the inside out of the markets. The proper training helps to minimize the loss in an uncertain market.

Stock market trading means trading in an uncertain environment. It is not difficult to make a living through trading. There are many successful traders who make a handsome living through trading, in fact, trading offers ample opportunity to a person knowing how to time his trade. There is no alternative to hard work and education.

If a person wants to make a living by trading stocks, he must have proper education and patience. He must know rules of the game. It is possible to make a career from trading stocks.

A big investment pitfall can be summed up in one word: greed. A major challenge when investing in stocks, ETFs or mutual funds is to remain with a working system, a methodology that produces results.

Too often new or even experienced investors get caught up in the “investing game”, the hype about what can be, the success story flowing from some sensational, but self-promoting newsletter or advertisement. There are dozens of ways to invest in the markets, not just stocks or ETFs or mutual funds, but using options or margin, buying and selling commodities, are amongst the many.

The key, as I have previously written, is to learn what suits you best and then to stick with it. Find a software program that works for you, based on your available time and the amount of risk you can afford.

Too often situations crop up that tempt you to sway from your path. These temptations can be:

• A friend telling you about new ways to invest money
• Volatile markets in which you aren’t recording gains but advertisements make it seem like going a different direction will make you bundles of dough
• Publicity and reports about new trends, like technology or foreign investments that tempt you to change course or even abandon your present methods

This doesn’t mean that there are not other methods to investment your money; it just means it is not a simple as the promoters or friends make it out to be. Switching tactics takes time to properly figure and evaluate the best tactics. Switching to totally new types of investments or investing styles can involve weeks and months of learning and studying.

So the question becomes: is it worth the time? Are the tradeoffs worth it?

If the methods you are using for investing are not working when everyone else is making money then, yes, you need to re-evaluate. But if your current methods do work, then perhaps they just need to be tweaked to make more money or perhaps the grass is not greener on the other side of the hill and you should stick with what you have.

If you are not satisfied with the results of a particular software program or you must work to make it work with your lifestyle then, yes, start looking for another investment software program. Don’t be afraid to contact your current software provider or any new one to see if you can do better with the program; in other words are there ways to boost performance that you may not know of but the authors are willing to share?’

Simply switching to new ways or places to invest can cost you money because of lost time and investment losses while you are learning so proceed cautiously and ask lots of questions.

The best commodity option trading system is one that suits the kind of market environment in which you are trading. Commodity prices are well known to be extremely volatile and unpredictable at times. All you have to do is compare long term charts of some commodities like soybeans, sugar or oil to those of stocks and you’ll quickly realize how different the trading environment can be.

So it’s important you choose a commodity option trading system that fits well with this kind of price action. One factor that should be borne in mind is that the supply and demand for many commodities are seasonal in nature. Understanding this will help you to develop a trading approach that takes advantage of this.

Which Commodity Option Trading System is Best?

Let’s divide our discussion into two parts here.

1. Trending Markets

Understanding the seasonal influences on commodity market prices will help you to anticipate when a change or continuation of trend is most likely. This being the case, you can choose to simply ‘go long’ (i.e. buy) either call or put options, usually with at least 90 days to expiry, so that you can take advantage of this.

The best options to purchase under these conditions are those that are either at-the-money (ATM) or first strike price out-of-the-money (OTM). You don’t want to go too far away from that, or your option values will not increase much even with a big move. OTM options are cheaper than ATM ones, and this means your profit potential is magnified once the options are in-the-money. It is not uncommon for a well timed OTM option on a commodity to increase 1,000 percent in value once a new trend begins.

So never underestimate the connection between seasonal factors on commodities and the advantage that newly trending markets provides.

The In-The-Money Debit Spread

This commodity option trading system is a good one for newly trending markets and involves purchasing an in-the-money option and selling an out-of-the-money option, both with the same expiry month. One advantage of this approach, is that the implied volatility in the OTM option will often be greater than for the ITM option. This disparity not only lowers your initial costs, but should the price of the underlying go against you, the overpriced OTM ‘sold’ option value will evaporate much more quickly than the ITM bought option, enabling you to repurchase the sold option for profit.

If the price of the underlying continues in your favour, the price of the ITM option will increase at a rate closer to the rate the underlying increases, due to a higher delta and the sold OTM option will not experience this same rate of increase until it becomes deeper in-the-money.

2. Volatile Markets

Commodity options are unlike stock options in that the underlying is a product rather than a company. Products like wheat, sugar, oil and bonds are more affected by natural disasters and international news events than company share prices, unless the company’s fortunes are heavily connected with a particular product.

For example, war breaks out in any middle eastern nation. What happens next? Oil prices become very volatile. A hurricane sweeps over a major sugar producing area. What happens? Sugar prices soar… and so on.

Implementing the right kind of commodity option trading system as soon as news of this kind breaks, can result in profits that are not only healthy, but quite safe as well.

The Straddle

Straddle or option strangle positions in newly volatile markets can be quite lucrative, as they are ideally tailored for large moves within a short time frame. They are also non-directional, so you don’t care which way the underlying price moves, as long as it is significant. Quite often, there will be an initial reaction to the news, followed by a reversal once its effects are known. This is the ideal time for the straddle or strangle to come into play.

The volatility that is ideally suited to these types of trades usually works best at the beginning of a bear market. Bear markets are characterised by wild swings, as panic, followed by buyers taking up bargain opportunities, causes the market to gyrate back and forth with large swings.
